Digital Media: Models

Shant Nida And Cindy

Exercise 2.2

We were interested in further exploring the duality of our previously created digital model, a monolithic cube with a hyper-real and highly-textured interior. We began by recreating our digital model physically in two ways: one foam monolith with moss spilling out of it and one plaster monolith carved away by sand and rock. The subsequent scans are combined into a tower. From there we contemplated two manipulations that would challenge the real world limitations of the objects: The short, rigid plaster monolith is twisted dramatically in contrast to a much more subtle twist of the tall, more malleable foam object. The lightweight foam object is rematerialized as a heavy brick construction held at one point of a crumpled paper base. These two effects are collapsed into a physical reinterpretation of the model as a pair of warped, egg-crate objects at different scales of density.
