Construct

Reimagines
the ionic column as both a digital and historical artifact through
manipulations that result in reinterpretations of its organic textures. The
structure imitates the act of being reclaimed by nature, the folds of rock
cloth landscape envelop the installation. Within the columns, a fractured
digital pattern is revealed, creating physical, vinyl interpretations of
digital geodes. Visitors can explore the landscape which seamlessly evolves
from organic and natural formations to a human affected, post-modern hellscape.
By playing with cavernous abstractions, the structure elicits an inherent sense
of natural formation, but is unsettling in its digital retexturing. The
constructable form is constituted of a pavilion that must be navigated,
mimicking the complexities of natural caves. When looking at form, the typical
purpose of columns are as supportive structures. This site turns that
assumption on its head by using manipulated fragments of columns to creative a
structure.
The manipulation process occurred in phases.
Each object has been
retextured with another object’s manipulated mapping from initial photogrammetric
scans. In addition, each object has undergone a series of transformations, from
decimating surfaces and creating new interpretations of texture and form with
the digital glitch reflected in translucent vinyl in the scaled ionic column,
to the use of transparencies and lighting to try and imitate a desert
landscape.
By intermingling Cinema 4D and Rhino/Grasshopper processing, a relationship emerges from the structure of different digital interpretations from a platform perspective.
