Digital Media: Artifacts

When we consider the process of photogrammetry or, in general, most 3D scanning/digitizing technologies, reflective surfaces are typically undesirable as re-imaging software have difficulty processing the data collected. This project's approach explores the opportunities of scanning reflective surfaces and the “errors” produced as artifacts to interpret both digital and physical environments. The inspiration came from MauritsCornelis Escher’s lithograph “Hand with Reflecting Sphere.” This method allowed for a distorted perspective of Escher in his room, in turn, deeming the sphere as an artifact, tool, or lens through which the world can be viewed. Using this concept, a reflective sphere is 3d scanned in three distinct environments: an artificially lit room, the street at night, and outside during the day. The results produced 3 digital forms having a loose resemblance to the original sphere. Still, with a “metadata” of unique coloration and distortions based on the time and context in which the scan was captured. The scanned artifacts are then rematerialized with a mirroring surface and introduced in different scenes to be observed as new distorted environments. Further exploration of increasing the bump map led to an enhanced rendering of the artifact. The artifacts were viewed at 3 scales, each producing a spatial, ever-changing atmosphere for the observer
